For the differently abled...

So here you can see one of the many reasons I love Mexico--the wonderful attention to detail. The first picture shows the wheelchair accessible staircase. It is made wheelchair accessible by the addition of blue painted rails and the blue square with the wheelchair in it. Apparently we're supposed to just launch our friends in wheelchairs from the top step and hope they land safely at the bottom. (I assume this is the down-only staircase).

Then, someone with (just barely) more than half a brain noticed that this probably wasn't a good idea, so they changed the blue square with the wheelchair, and instead drew a nice picture of the (one and only) person at our school who walks with a cane. I'm sure she appreciates the railings, but probably not the portrait.

What a surprise!

A couple of months ago I was talking on the phone to my old pal Terence (b.k.a. T!) about his upcoming birthday. He told me he was planning a party and that all the old crowd would be getting together at his house on February 2nd. I was a little jealous that everyone would be together (I won't even start about the wedding in Costa Rica), and so I started looking at plane tickets. It just so happened that there was a good price on the direct flight from Mexico City to Atlanta. It also just so happened that that weekend was a long weekend for me (hooray, Mexico has a Constitution). So I bought the ticket then and there, but kept it all on the down low.

Keely was driving over to Atlanta from Birmingham after work on Friday, and so she picked me up at the airport, and hid me in the backseat under a bunch of junk. When she got to T's house, she called him and asked him to come out to help unload all her junk (which is a totally plausible ruse--it happens all the time). Well, when T came out, I popped out and scared him out of his knickers. Okay, his sweat pants.

But he said that he'd had an idea that I was coming. How? I dunno. But the three of us hung out that night, drinking wine and chatting, then spent Saturday getting ready for the party. Lots of people came, and fun was had by all! I even took the liberty of inviting a couple of my friends, just so I could get to see them. But it was great--everyone got along and had a really good time.

I flew back to Mexico (where I'm writing this) today (Monday), and now I'm getting mentally prepared to go back to work. But I did remember to take pictures.
